A Quieted Soul

O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; nor do I involve myself in great matters, or in things too difficult for me (vs1).

David saw that through pride or ambition, he could get caught up in things too hard to do or too difficult to comprehend (for instance, figure out why Saul was trying to kill him and get him to stop).  Rather than walk in or meddle with such things, he chose to compose and quiet his soul:

Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child rests against his mother, my soul is like a weaned child within me (vs 2).

To Aquiet@ his soul is Ato be silent, be still, to wait.@  In Psalm 37:7 (NAS) it is translated, ARest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way....@  In Psalm 62:5 (NAS), it is translated, AMy soul, wait in silence for God only, for my hope is from Him.@  In his footnotes to Psalm 131:2 (The Ryrie Study Bible), Charles Ryrie wrote, AAs a child who has successfully gone through the troublesome process of weaning and found contentment, so David had been delivered from all self-seeking and had found contentment in the Lord.@  Thus David concludes the psalm:

O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forever (vs 3).

In some situations, it is better to lean against the Lord and rest.  Make known to Him your desires and concerns with prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, then get quiet and wait, established in hope.  God will not disappoint.
