The Broken Heart In scripture, the word heart refers to the hidden or inner personB that is, our inner life that others don= t know because it= s hidden from them, but that we experience and that God sees. In The Bible, the words "soul" and "spirit" are also often to used point to this inner life of the heart. The human heart can be broken. Sin, injustice, abuse, abandonment, neglect, broken relationships, trauma, betrayal, disappointed expectation--all these and many other events can bruise your soul and crush your spirit. So what do you do for a broken heart? Isaiah 61:1 foretold that the Messiah would be sent by God and anointed by the Holy Spirit to "bind up the brokenhearted." Jesus announced in Luke 4:18 that He was sent "to heal the brokenhearted ... and to set at liberty them that are bruised," signifying those who are "broken down by emotional calamities." Psalm 34:18 says "the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed (or contrite) in spirit". He promises in Isaiah 42:3 that "a bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish". Psalm 147:3 says instead that "He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds." As Word Based Counselors, we believe these promises. Therefore, when we are ministering to someone who= s heart has been hurt, broken, or bruised, we look to Jesus to bring forth healing by the Spirit of God. We pray with and for the client, to help them release the wounds and receive supernatural healing and wholeness in their hearts. |
